Speak Easy of Murder
Today, the historic Brumder Mansion is known as the most romantic
Bed & Breakfast Inn in the city of Milwaukee,
with fine Victorian furnishings and a bounty of amenities
for the discriminating guest or the weary traveler – and
the kind of personal service no hotel can match.
But it wasn't always so. Like any building that has stood the test of time, the Brumder Mansion has a past.
Once upon a time, many years ago – at the height of The Roaring 20s – our beloved Brumder fell into the hands of a notorious gangster, who opened a secret nightclub there – a speakeasy – that
soon became the scene of many a shady tale.
One such tale we offer now. It's a colorful story filled with colorful characters: lovers and gangsters, detectives and flappers.
Follow us down the carpeted stairs to the speakeasy and see for yourself...
There's Mother Gunther over at the bar, setting out the wine glasses. That dame's saucy as all get-out. Been around the block more than a few times, but believe me she gives as good as she gets.
The flapper in the sequined dress? That's Amber Hartman. See how she's working the crowd, flirting up a storm with all the gents. The Brumder's just a stop on the road to bigger and better things for Amber. Broadway. Hollywood. Or so she thinks.
The kid making moon eyes at her is Danny Jacobs. Hard-luck case, that one. Grew up in an orphanage. Still has a chip on his shoulder about it. Good kid though.
The others you'll meet later. Tony Miletti. Big-shot hoodlum out of Chi-Town. You won't miss him when he shows. He knows how to make a big entrance.
Oh and Detective Charlie Reubens. What story set in a speakeasy would be complete without a gumshoe? Only Charlie's in over his head this time. He'll be getting more than he bargained for tonight.
And that's all I've got to say for now. You want to know more you got to see the show, dig? I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise...

MOBSTERS AND GUN MOLLS IGNITE MYSTERY
AT MILWAUKEE'S HISTORIC BRUMDER MANSION
Local history buffs know that the imposing four-story brick home at 3046 West Wisconsin Avenue, known as the Brumder Mansion, was once owned by a mobster named Sam Pick. Pick, who had connections with the notorious Al Capone, is said to have used the Brumder Mansion as a private "speakeasy" during the Roaring 20s where he served up bathtub gin, beautiful women and hosted high-stakes gambling. Today, the Brumder Mansion has been beautifully renovated into an elegant bed and breakfast.
MurderMysteries.com hosts a series of "Murder at the Mansion" mystery dinners at the Brumder Mansion. The exciting interactive murder mystery event, entitled, "Speak Easy of Murder", premiered at the Brumder Mansion in March/April 2011, and was repeated in September, and will be performed again for 4 additional weekends starting on March 2nd 2012.
Mystery fans will enjoy a lively theatrical experience amid the Victorian splendor of the mansion as they are challenged to solve a puzzling murder. "This play has something for everyone," explains Tom and Julie. "Anyone who loves a thrilling 'whodunnit' will have their chance to solve our mystery but history fans will also enjoy stepping back in time to Milwaukee in the late 1920s. The plot of our play builds in lots of local history, period costumes for the actors and even costumes for the audience to wear, plus more than a few twists and turns to keep everyone guessing until the final climax when the solution to the mystery will be revealed."
